Three Exercises To Recover From A Fractured Femur
A fractured femur is like all the other fractures that can occur on your body. The femur is a heavy bone supporting all your body weight and does need ample amount of time to recover correctly and you MUST include the necessary exercise to help your femur grow back in the healing phase. If there was surgery needed on your femur fracture then these exercises are what you need to get back to 100%.
Quadricep Sets
The first exercise you will phase during recovery after surgery is an isometric exercise targeting your thighs. While you’re in bed, a physical therapist will ask you to push the back part of your knees into the bed and hold that position until you’ve counted to 5. Attempt to do this about ten times as it will help your thigh muscles rebuild after surgery.
Gluteal Sets
This is like the quadricep sets that you just read about. In this exercise you will be squeezing your buttocks together and holding the position for a slow count to 5. The reason these muscle are affected is because of the surgery and they must be stimulated again due to the anestesia you just had. The gluteals/your butt are important to strengthen because they assist you immensely in walking correctly again.
Lying Hip Flexion and Extension
While lying in bed you will be instructed to bend the hip and knee together while you slide your heel on the bed. This won’t easy at first so there will be some assistance given to you. The therapist could put their hand under your heel to help or put something else down that will assist with the resistance from the beds linens. Doing this ten times is also a good place to start like the other exercises.
Conclusion
It won’t be easy at first, but as you continue to rebuild your muscles these exercises will become much easier to do and you will be back at 100% in no time. Exercises will progress and with your dedication and hard work you’ll be walking around with ease!
